The urban regeneration proposal for the former Aermacchi industrial site in Varese aims to create a multi-purpose complex combining sports, office and retail functions: a project with a strong public focus thanks to the creation of new spaces and public services.
The project focuses on theformer Aermacchi aeronautical industry site, founded in the early 1900s and decommissioned in 1993: a place where, over the course of almost a century, the finest aircraft of the Italian Air Force were assembled. Today, this site constitutes an empty, abandoned block within the residential urban fabric that has grown up around it. The transformation of this area could therefore serve as a potential catalyst for the development of the urban context of which it forms part, situated close to the historic centre.
The main objective for the urban and architectural regeneration of this area is to integrate, expand and repurpose the historic elements into a single, organic and coherent whole with the new building volume. The latter, light and transparent, will act as a connecting element between the two existing main volumes, thereby integrating all the new functions into a single building complex.
The project involves the creation of two large outdoor spaces: in the northern part of the site, the development of an urban park integrated with the new cycle path; in the southern part, the creation of paved urban spaces in front of the multi-purpose building, including an entrance plaza and a car park.
The result is a project that enhances and celebrates the history of the area while meeting the functional requirements of a contemporary hub for urban life.
