Who we are

International award winning architecture studio, Piuarch is a collective that finds its major power and strength in its plurality. This cohesion entails different backgrounds and identities which guarantees a multi-faceted approach to work. About 30 collaborators organized in working groups create synergies according to the personalities involved in each project, constantly pursuing dialogue and attention to detail. The design process feeds on these differences, considering them as a source of wealth and comparison, dialogue and the exchanging of ideas, giving an added value to the work. The references to draw on are therefore manifold and influence our work, creating an osmotic relation between Piuarch identities and the ongoing projects. It is this heterogeneity that defines a cohesive whole where recognition of the group is stronger than individuality and architecture becomes the driving force.

The Workspace

The studio is located in an open space in a former industrial building that once hosted a typography business in Brera , in the centre of Milan. Here, Piuarch designs public buildings, office and residential complexes, commer - cial spaces, boutiques, shopping malls and even urban plans, with the contribution of consultants from various disciplines.Piuarch is located in the Brera district of Milan, in an old warehouse inside a courtyard that was once occupied by a typography. Occupying two levels, the office is an open space without partitions: a large open space, with big tables around which the partners work together, without a hierarchal organization of the positions within it. Fluid and continuous, the area of each floor has been designed to encourage co-working and full participation of the team members in the designing and collective discussion stages.

Common Areas

The discussion and examination of the project always continue in the common areas, with new opportunities for comparison. The spacious kitchen was conceived to promote the exchanging of ideas during breaks, to share ongoing projects among the different work groups, so that the entire Piuarch team is always informed about schedules, deadlines and results. Big work tables are spread in the studio, while the rooftop garden is an exceptional place for meetings and co-working during the warmest months.

Lab

A large wooden table for cutting cardboard and sheets of wood or transparent plastic: in the office, architecture still maintains a strong impression of craftsmanship. The space where the study and design models are made has shelvings for holding 3-dimensional models, monographs and architectural magazines. Lastly, a materials library with samples of surfaces, coverings, fabrics, portions of façades and technical solutions covers the walls of the upper floor, creating the effect of a place where details are concretely analyzed in depth.

The Rooftop Garden

Above the Piuarch offices there is a rooftop vegetable garden, created using a modular pallet system that makes it possible to create easily assembled structures: paths wander through planted areas where vegetables, fruit and aromatic herbs are mixed with flowers to enhance its aesthetic beauty. The garden is many things in one: a project to enhance the building’s energy efficiency; a decorative landscape tool producing its own food and a new reception, socializing and co-working space for everybody working in the building.
